The 4Cs Of Diamonds

Using the Four Cs is a great way to start your diamond exploring journey.

The Four Cs—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat—are essential criteria for evaluating diamond quality. Developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the 1940s, these standards provide a universal scale to describe and determine the quality of diamonds.

CUT

measures the proportion and balance of a diamond’s dimensions, influencing the brilliance and sparkle of its facets. Diamond cut is often considered the most important of the Four Cs;

an "Excellent" cut diamond captivates the eye with the most exceptional brilliance.

COLOR

refers to the absence of color in a diamond, making it the second most important of the Four Cs.

The less color a diamond has, the higher its grade. Colorless diamonds are the rarest and most valuable. Diamonds with other natural hues, such as blue, red, or pink, are classified as ‘fancy color’ diamonds and are graded differently than white, colorless diamonds.

CLARITY

refers to the absence of internal inclusions and surface blemishes in a diamond. Inclusions naturally occur during the diamond formation process.

Diamonds without inclusions or blemishes are rare, however, most of these characteristics are only visible under magnification.

CARAT

is a unit of measurement that describes a diamond’s weight, not its size. One carat equals 1/5 of a gram and is subdivided into 100 points.

As an objective measure, carat weight is a popular indicator for expressing how ‘big’ a diamond appears.

Natural Diamond vs. Lab Grown Diamond

Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical, optical, and physical properties and crystal structure, and exhibit the same fire, scintillation, and sparkle. They are both real diamonds.

The primary difference between them is their origin. Natural diamonds form over millions of years deep within the Earth’s crust, while lab-grown diamonds are produced in controlled laboratory environments in just weeks or months.

To the unaided eye, laboratory-grown diamonds look identical to natural diamonds. Advanced testing by specialized laboratories is typically required to distinguish between the two.
